Parks director details Bethel Park, Catawba Meadows and mountain-bike trail progress

Morganton — Parks and Recreation Director Brian Fish briefed the council June 16 on progress at Bethel Park and Catawba Meadows and on related amenities.
Fish said playground equipment for Bethel Park has been ordered and is expected to be delivered Aug. 1, with installation shortly afterward. He added that eight pickleball courts have been paved and fencing and shelter work are underway. On Catawba Meadows, Fish reported that sections of the park and greenway are expected to open in mid-July but some sections remain unsafe because of storm damage; the Rocky Ford Greenway section continues to be unstable and will be barricaded.
Fish also described work on the disc-golf course and community gardens. He said the community gardens will not return because agricultural activity is not allowed in the park easement; restrooms and some facilities will remain closed until repairs are complete. Foothills Conservancy has managed construction of the mountain-bike trail and is coordinating community cleanup days and signage ahead of opening.
Fish thanked maintenance crews and outside partners for their work and urged the public to respect barricades and stay out of closed areas for safety.
