Morganton awards storm-drain, HVAC, park-engineering and tree-trimming contracts

Morganton — During its June 16 meeting the City Council approved multiple procurement and construction items, awarding contracts for a storm-drain replacement, HVAC control upgrades, park inspection/closeout work and annual tree trimming.
Sally briefed the council on a failed storm drain near McDowell and Bay streets requiring roughly 500 linear feet of pipe replacement. After receiving four sealed bids, staff recommended contracting with Country Boy Landscaping Inc. of Harmony, North Carolina, whose bid was the lowest responsive at $629,643.17; council authorized awarding the contract and approved a contingency that brings available project funding to $650,000.
The council also authorized contracting with Trane U.S., Inc. of Charlotte to replace and upgrade the HVAC control system at COMMA at a cost not to exceed $37,700. For Bethel Park, the council approved a contract with Wildlands Engineering for inspection, permitting compliance and grant closeout services for $88,130, and extended the construction completion deadline for Baker Grading and Landscaping to Dec. 31, 2025 because Hurricane Helene caused delays.
Finally, the council awarded the annual tree-trimming contract to Davie Tree Experts Company at an hourly rate of $134.30 for work from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026, not to exceed $225,000. Staff noted several local companies bid but participation has been constrained by workload in the region.
