Shawnee council appoints zoning board member, approves bonds, new website and furnishings

Shawnee’s City Council on Monday appointed Nick Bergstrom to the Board of Zoning Appeals and approved several citywide purchases and financing measures, the city’s communications director reported in a meeting summary.
Doug Donahue, the city’s communications director, said the council voted 7-0 to confirm Bergstrom to the board seat vacated by Greg Withrow. Council member Laurel Burchfield was absent; Donahue noted votes were based on seven members present. The appointment fills an immediate vacancy on a body that hears zoning appeals and variances.
The council also approved general obligation bonds to fund nine projects across the city, Donahue said. The package includes eight stormwater projects and funds a new fire truck for the Shawnee Fire Department. The wrap-up did not specify the vote tally for the bond authorization.
Council members approved a complete furniture package for the city facilities and IT departments; Donahue reported that vote as 7-0. The council likewise approved a contract with Civic Plus to design, build and host a new City of Shawnee website, with Donahue reporting a 7-0 vote on that contract. The city expects the new website to go online in April or May 2026.
Mayor Sandifer, joined by members of the Shawnee Fire Department, declared the week of October as Fire Prevention Week and urged residents to learn proper disposal methods for lithium-ion batteries.
