Council hears update on county road millage allocation and Safe Routes to School project

Village staff and the village engineer briefed the council on two related infrastructure topics: how county-level road millage funds will be allocated and the status of Safe Routes to School and water-main phase 2 projects.
Staff explained that voters approved a county road millage, but the county will receive and allocate the revenues; the village’s estimated share was described as roughly $97,000, sufficient to repave an estimated two blocks depending on scope. Council members asked how allocations are determined and staff confirmed the county and road commission handle allocation and that villages receive their statutory shares.
Officer Alexander of Spicer reported the firm completed field reviews for Safe Routes to School, marked preliminary sidewalk alignments, delineated wetlands to avoid conflicts, and modeled corridor crossings. Spicer also said two Category B grant applications and an RD (rural development) application for phase 2 water-main work were finalized and that award notices are expected around mid-September.
Council and staff discussed likely right-of-way impacts (tree work, some post/pole relocations) and emphasized efforts to minimize tree removals and property impacts while improving pedestrian safety near the school.
