The Crescent City Council on Aug. 18 approved a budget amendment and authorized the city manager to sign Homeland Security grant documents to procure a regional 5‑gas multimeter for Crescent City Fire & Rescue and to fund police forensic tools and subscriptions.
Fire Chief Carey told the council the five‑gas monitor will measure lower explosive limits, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide and will be available to other district partners; the department anticipates sharing the asset across the region. Police Chief Griffin described the department’s forensic capacity, saying local Cellebrite tools speed data extraction and reduce turnaround times for partner agencies and noting an ongoing need for certified staff to operate equipment.
City staff requested adoption of a budget amendment to record grant revenue and to authorize the city manager to sign grant documents. The staff report noted the police operational subscription and support amount of $16,500 was already reflected in the budget; the fire equipment required the budget amendment. Council moved, seconded and adopted the resolution on a unanimous roll call.
Council members praised the interagency cooperation and noted that Measure S and other local funding sources had helped the police department develop its forensics capability; staff said training and certification costs (roughly $5,600–$6,000 for one week of operator training) remain to be scheduled.
