Council hears Clean Power Alliance update; members report on Simi Valley RNG tour

Council member Deborah Klein Lopez told the Agoura Hills City Council that Clean Power Alliance is preparing to buy additional renewable energy from the SunZia wind project in New Mexico and that the agency is considering two cities for membership.
"We are actually going to be buying more power from the SunZia wind project in New Mexico," Klein Lopez said, adding that the project is a large wind resource that can help complement California solar by providing overnight generation. She also said the alliance is pursuing membership expansions by cities including Cudahy and Fillmore, subject to local approvals and California Public Utilities Commission review.
Separately, multiple council members reported on a tour of a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the Simi Valley landfill that processes methane into pipeline gas. Council members said the project captured landfill methane equivalent to removing about 2,000 trash‑truck trips per day and can generate gas to power roughly 60,000 homes per year. Members described the project as an example of interagency partnership to produce energy from waste.
No city action items or budget votes related to the energy updates were taken at the meeting; the reports were for information and will be reflected in future staff briefings if next steps are required.
