Chatham County Schools honors more than 60 students for state- and regional-level achievements

Chatham County Schools opened its May 12 meeting with an academic awards celebration that recognized more than 60 students who placed first at state or regional competitions across academics, arts and athletics.
Dr. Jackson, the district superintendent, framed the evening around the district’s theme, saying, “Your success is a testament to your discipline, your creativity, your perseverance,” and previewed two videos highlighting district programs and student work.
The program listed a broad set of honors: All-State band and jazz participants from multiple high schools, International Thespian Society honors (Abigail Zwolin earned superior ratings on two adjudicated pieces), and DPAC Rising Stars finalists (including Larkin Ragland and Delaney Fuqua). Elementary recognitions included Carson Scholars (Catherine Gwynapp, Beatrice Allen) and multiple North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities (NCSAA) team winners.
At the middle-school level, district staff recognized regional science fair winners and NC Beta Club honorees. High-school honors included perfect ACT scores (Aiden Laseth; Henry St. Clair), a North Carolina Community College Academic Excellence Award recipient (Jack Trigleona), a Gates Scholar (Yasmine Lopez Munoz) and National Merit finalist Paige Vanderveen. Career and technical education winners from Future Farmers of America, HOSA and SkillsUSA were also named.
Officials also recognized students selected for attendance at the North Carolina Governor’s School and seniors in the district dual-language pathway who will receive a global language endorsement on their diplomas. Jessica Pacion, the district public information officer, presented staff and community recognitions including an April Champion of Character (Clara Jane “CJ” White) and a Power of One award to Melinda Chase, cafeteria manager at Chatham Central High School.
The awards ceremony concluded with a reception for families. The board then proceeded into its regular agenda, beginning formal business following the recognitions.
