Burrillville School Committee adopts AI policy, approves 2025–26 calendar and routine measures

The Burrillville School Committee on Feb. 11 approved Policy 34-21, setting district guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in classrooms and staff work, and adopted several other policies and the 2025–26 school calendar.
During the policy's second reading, members and staff focused on professional development and privacy protections. Superintendent Dr. Solito said the district held a recent professional-development roundtable on AI that "we had about 25 to 30 teachers that attended," and that a protocol will be distributed to faculty and staff once the policy is approved to explain age-appropriate classroom use.
Student Representative Ben told the committee of a classroom example: "I used it today, in engineering ... it can output code for me and debug code for me," describing how generative AI helped him complete a SkillsUSA project.
Members spoke in favor of a platform-agnostic policy to avoid limiting future tools. After discussion the committee voted to approve the AI policy by voice vote.
At the same meeting the committee approved Policy 42-19 (internal controls for grants) and Policy 42-20 (Title I funding methodology), both on second readings, and took the first reading and approval of Policy 7373-11 (youth nutrition student account policy). The group also approved homeschool applications and the district's annual meeting calendar.
