The Burrillville School Committee voted March 11 to approve a maintenance and access use agreement that formalizes the upper field and Levy Rink as a town-managed athletic complex while leaving other school facilities under district control.
Superintendent Dr. Salito explained the agreement delineates what falls under town jurisdiction (the upper field and rink as a bundled athletic complex) while Alumni Field, the lower practice field, tennis courts, parking lots and school-owned structures remain under school responsibility. "The athletic complex itself would be defined as the upper field and the rink," he said, outlining the intended division of duties.
Members raised questions about site naming (Gledhill Field), what "other amenities" would include (the field house, stands and viewing plaza were cited), parking access rules for non-school events, insurance and liability for outside users, and the rink's past financial performance. The superintendent said outside organizations would need insurance and that school events would receive priority scheduling.
After clarification on boundaries and administrative next steps for a master calendar and use rules, the committee approved the agreement by voice vote. Members said they expect additional discussions on operations, a potential athletic-complex director and further details on revenue and expense responsibilities as the town and school finalize operational plans.
