Board OKs small meal-price increase; renews Notre Dame food-service agreement

The Burlington Community School District approved small increases to student meal prices for 2025-26 and renewed a food-service contract with Notre Dame during its Aug. 11 meeting.
Alma, the district food-service presenter, told the board the district participates in the National School Lunch Program and must gradually align with the state standard (cited in the meeting as $3.85). Using the PLE tool the district proposed raising prices by 10 cents this year. Under the approved schedule, breakfast will be $2.30 for elementary/intermediate and $2.50 for middle/high school; lunch will be $3.05 for elementary/intermediate and $3.15 for middle/high school. Alma said district students still qualify for free meals under a waiver for another year; the price increases affect extras and adult meals.
Separately, the board approved a renewed agreement to provide meals to Notre Dame. The district will raise the charge for Notre Dame from $2.75 to $2.90 per meal; Notre Dame provides its own servers and milk while Burlington prepares and delivers the meals.
Board members discussed the limits of how much the board could raise prices and the logistics of the Notre Dame arrangement. The motions to approve the meal-price schedule and the Notre Dame agreement passed by voice votes with 'aye' recorded on the transcript.
