Residents press commissioners on overdevelopment and invite leaders to 4‑H dairy derby

During public comment at the Sept. 2 meeting of the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners, residents raised growth and environmental concerns and invited officials to a youth agriculture event.
Barbara Kuchinski Gilbert, who identified her address, urged the board to address what she called "overdevelopment in Brunswick County," called the county's unified development ordinance outdated, and asked the board to reclaim final approval authority from the planning board until the UDO is updated. She said roads, water supply, electricity and healthcare capacity were already at about 80% and warned of evacuation challenges in a major hurricane.
Bill Immen told the board he has lived in the county for decades and expressed alarm at declining water quality and the permanent closure of clamming grounds. He urged preserving the county’s natural features for future generations.
Nora Thompson, representing Brunswick County 4‑H, described the 4‑H dairy project’s educational benefits and invited the board and public to the first county 4‑H Dairy Derby on Friday, Oct. 17 beginning at 3 p.m.
The board did not take action during public comment on development items at the meeting; commissioners later discussed stormwater, DOT maintenance and the need for a task force during the after‑action presentation.
