Brookings School District schedules rummage sales after declaring surplus items

The Brookings School District 05-1 Board of Education on Wednesday declared surplus items from three schools and approved a schedule of rummage sales to dispose of the materials.
During the special meeting, district staff member Stacy presented the list attached to the agenda and said the items came from Camelot, Midairie and Mickelson Middle School. “We’ve got surplus items from Camelot, Midairie, and the Mickelson Middle School,” Stacy said, and added that three district reviewers determined no single item was worth more than $2,500.
Because each item is under the $2,500 threshold, Stacy told the board the district is not required to run a 10‑day newspaper advertisement. Instead, the district will hold rummage sales at each of the three schools on Wednesday, July 30 from 4 to 6 p.m., with a district representative present at each site and the list of items posted on the district website and social media.
Stacy also explained how unsold items will be handled: items that do not sell at the sales will be discarded and placed in a roll‑off dumpster on the following Monday.
The board moved and seconded the declaration of surplus items and approved the plan as proposed.
The district did not provide individual item valuations in the meeting; the board recorded that reviewers found no item exceeding the $2,500 statutory threshold that would require additional advertising or separate disposition procedures.
