Judge Shirley L. Bottom proclaimed October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Boyle County on Sept. 23 and the court adopted the proclamation by vote.
Ashley, a victim advocate identified during the meeting as working with the Boyd County Attorney's Office, thanked the court and described local resources for survivors. She announced a community awareness event set for Sept. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Constitution Square, with resource tables, speakers and activities for children; she also noted donations of purple light bulbs for awareness efforts.
During discussion, a magistrate described a recent homicide in another county and cited a news report that ranked Kentucky first in domestic violence; magistrates and the advocate reviewed differences between civil protective orders (EPO/DBO) and criminal charges and urged immediate reporting when abuse is suspected. The court encouraged residents to use available resources and promoted a countywide effort to 'wear purple' during October in support of survivors.
The proclamation directs county residents and agencies to support survivors and promote safety, and the court asked staff to help publicize the Sept. 30 event and resource opportunities.
