BVSD students build homes as part of Boulder Mod partnership; district highlights Apex Construction Trades

Boulder Valley School District highlighted its Apex Construction Trades students at the Sept. 23 board meeting, presenting a short video and student remarks about Boulder Mod, a net‑zero modular construction facility the district operates in partnership with the city of Boulder and Flatirons Habitat for Humanity.

Superintendent Dr. Anderson introduced the student moment and described the facility as a hands‑on learning site where students build nearly complete houses that will provide affordable housing in the community. Several seniors — including Sofia McPhee (student lead at Boulder Mod), Jim Baker, Evan Gronqvist and Sean McCormick — told the board they have learned OSHA‑certified safety practices, worked with trade partners (electricians, plumbers) and prepared capstone projects that will be reviewed by industry partners. McPhee said the experience helped with management and leadership skills: “I was bossing everybody around,” she said, adding that the students rotate leadership roles to gain experience.

Students said modules roll out at about 80% complete and that they take pride in knowing a family will live in the houses they build. Staff noted the program’s Nov. 6 industry job fair at Boulder Mod to connect students with internships and employment after graduation. Board members praised the program as a model of career and technical education and noted the partnership’s contribution to affordable‑housing goals.

The presentation underscored district efforts to link classroom learning with community needs and employment pathways; board members asked staff to continue reporting on outcomes, industry placements and any opportunities to scale similar programs.
