Bolivar R‑I board debates ethics-policy language on dissent, refers suggested wording to MSBA counsel

The Bolivar R‑I Board on Aug. 21 debated language in its ethics policy (BBF) that says, in part, "Express personal opinions, but once the board has acted, accept the will of the majority."
Several board members said the word "accept" is ambiguous and could be interpreted to limit their right to publicly dissent after a board vote. One member said the policy "was used against me," arguing the language could be weaponized. Other trustees said the policy was meant to encourage unity but should not prevent members from voicing their views.
Board member Drew proposed adding clarification that the policy shall not prohibit dissenting members from voicing their opinion on a ruling or agenda item. The board voted to take that recommended wording to the Missouri School Boards' Association (MSBA) or legal counsel for wording review and return a recommended policy change at the September meeting.
No immediate policy amendment was adopted; legal review is expected before final action.
