The board also reviewed a new student sun protection policy required by state law (allowing students to carry and use sunscreen without a doctor’s note and giving principals limited authority to restrict certain product types) and draft dress-and-grooming policies for staff that explicitly permit culturally significant attire. Two policies (electronic surveillance in school buildings and student smoking) were advanced to second reading and were approved by roll call votes during the meeting.
The committee will return with clarified language on the cultural‑competence requirement and related implementation details; board members said they want explicit policy language describing the approved course list and waiver/implementation procedures before final adoption.
