Hamblen County schools secure $4.98 million energy-efficiency loan; district projects six-figure first-year savings

The Hamblen County Board of Education was informed that the district applied for and received a $4,980,000 loan from the state’s Energy Efficient Schools Initiative and intends to move quickly to sign the agreement and begin work.
"We applied for and received $4,980,000," Director Bunch told the board, adding that the state’s maximum loan is $5,000,000. He said the county and district must sign paperwork the district received and that attorneys are already coordinating the next steps.
Bunch said the district estimates first-year energy savings "greater than $300,000," a figure he called conservative, and said the goal is to start work in late August or September so the improvements and savings can begin accruing during the coming school year.
Board members did not ask for extended discussion; the financing and the related motion were presented as routine action items and carried by voice vote. The district will return with the signed agreement and implementation schedule once the county and attorney complete the required steps.
