Oakdale council accepts $63,000 OTS STEP grant to bolster selective traffic enforcement

Oakdale City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to accept $63,000 in grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).
The police chief told the council the STEP grant pays for targeted enforcement such as DUI checkpoints, DUI saturation patrols, distracted‑driving enforcement, motorcycle safety operations, crosswalk enforcement and speed prevention campaigns. The grant also supports training for officers in areas such as standard field sobriety testing and drug recognition.
The chief said Oakdale has participated in STEP grants for the last four years and cited recent local results: a 6% reduction in overall injury crashes in 2024, a 34% drop in injury severity in crashes compared with 2023, and a 28% decrease in DUI‑related collisions compared with 2023. Year‑to‑date 2025 figures presented included a 24% decline in non‑injury collisions and a 12% drop in injury crashes.
Council members thanked staff for pursuing the funding and noted the administrative work required to apply for and administer OTS grants. The council then moved, seconded and approved the resolution on a roll‑call vote of 5–0.
What’s next: City police will implement grant‑funded enforcement campaigns tied to national and state traffic safety campaigns and will report on grant activities as required by OTS.
