Newton commission approves event permits, street closures and licenses; public comment raises cemetery and motel concerns

The Newton City Commission approved several routine permits and street closures, acted on a short‑term license request for a new business and heard public comment on local concerns.

Staff recommended and the commission approved temporary alcohol permits for the United Way Chili Cook‑Off and for the Blues, Brews & Barbecue event scheduled Sept. 27, and separately approved city assistance (picnic tables, snow fencing and trash containers) for the Blues event. The commission also approved a temporary cereal malt beverage license for 5 R Newton at 200 Manchester; staff said the application met requirements and noted the permit runs through Dec. 31, with the business returning in December for a full‑year license.

The commission approved street closures for the Taste of Newton event on Oct. 2 and for Newton High School's homecoming parade Oct. 3 after staff review and departmental signoffs.

During public comment, Bill Glass raised three concerns: damaged or missing flower vases at a local cemetery, an observation that water was being delivered to City Hall and questions about that practice, and a question about a nearly vacant motel in the context of city plans for a new hotel. "I've noticed that all the vases... have been damaged, destroyed, or missing," Glass said, urging the city to investigate whether vandalism is occurring. The commission did not announce specific follow‑up actions on those public comments at the meeting.

The commission also voted to recess into two executive sessions—one for real estate acquisition and one for attorney‑client consultation—and later returned to open session; the mayor announced no action was taken following the closed sessions.
