Council OKs downtown commercial property rehabilitation district after added public hearing

Monroe City Council on Aug. 19 adopted a resolution to establish a Downtown Commercial Property Rehabilitation District after an added public hearing produced no public comment.
City Manager Robinson and Director Cochran explained the district is intended to fall under Michigan’s commercial property tax exemption provisions and offer building owners access to tax credits and incentives similar to other local redevelopment tools. Robinson said notices had been mailed and posted and that the omission from the printed Friday agenda was an administrative oversight; the council agreed to add the public hearing and proceed.
The council moved the resolution under council action and approved it by roll call.
Next step: the resolution was adopted at the meeting; the administration said staff will proceed with implementation steps outlined in the resolution.
