Council votes fail to reject Local Officers Compensation Commission recommendations; raises stand

City staff explained that the Local Officers Compensation Commission (LOCC) issues salary recommendations biennially for elected positions. On Aug. 19 the council considered motions to adopt resolutions rejecting the LOCC’s recommended 3% increases for the mayor, treasurer and council.
The city attorney clarified that rejecting a LOCC recommendation requires a two-thirds council vote (5 of 7 members) and explained filing and 30‑day timelines related to LOCC letters. After discussion a motion to reject the recommendation for the mayor failed 2–5; similar motions for the treasurer and council seats likewise failed 2–5. Council members who voted against rejection said the increase roughly tracks a cost-of-living adjustment; those supporting rejection cited fiscal prudence or other policy reasons.
Because the motions to reject failed, the LOCC recommendation will stand and the modest salary increases become effective per the LOCC timetable unless council later takes additional action consistent with legal requirements.
