Budget committee members reported a recommended transfer of $104,270.80 from the county general fund balance to cover the costs of two special elections ordered by the governor after Congressman Mark Green’s retirement. The writ sets a special primary for Oct. 7, 2025, and a special general for Dec. 2, 2025.
The committee noted the transfer will pay for election workers, machines, ballot printing and setup; staff said there will be no state reimbursement and federal offices do not provide reimbursement for the cost of local administration of federal special elections. "There is no reimbursement by the state," a committee member said.
The committee also reported several smaller transfers for county operations (computers for jail sergeants, county clerk equipment and software, HVAC replacements) and recommended forwarding them to the full commission for approval. The committee highlighted that special-election costs are a one-time county expense tied to the vacancy and not a recurring appropriation.
