Clayton County schools receive 39 state nutrition awards; district announces recognition program, events and calendar dates

Audrey Hamilton, executive director of school nutrition, told the board that the Georgia School Nutrition Association presented 39 awards to 30 Clayton County schools across four categories: 3% increases in breakfast and lunch participation and consistently high breakfast and lunch participation. Hamilton said the winners included 15 elementary programs, seven middle‑school programs and eight high‑school programs; two nutrition programs received honors in three categories and seven schools earned recognition in multiple categories. Examples named in the presentation included MD Roberts Middle School of the Arts (Kwanzita Marshall) and Riverdale High School (Angela Christopher).
Shakira Rice announced a new monthly staff recognition program; monthly awardees will receive $500 checks. Rice also said two students who presented at the district’s family engagement conference would each receive $100 gift cards provided through a new partner, Reece Automotive.
District communications staff and student representatives shared announcements for September events: curriculum nights for elementary (Sept. 11), middle (Sept. 18) and high schools (Sept. 25) from 5–7 p.m.; a virtual school‑choice fair on Sept. 13 (9 a.m.–noon) with program‑specific hours; a 'Let's Talk Literacy' event Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m.; and the mental‑health awareness 5K on Sept. 27 at Clayton County International Park. The district also noted observance of Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15–Oct. 15 and invited students to request a digital public library card via ClassLink.
Board members offered congratulations to individual students and staff, and the meeting proceeded to the consent and business agenda items later in the evening.
