Moms for Liberty speaker urges Catawba board to move 20 library titles to age-appropriate locations

Sandy Jarvis, speaking on behalf of North Carolina Moms for Liberty, told the Catawba County Board of Education she had provided the board “a list of 20 books that are available to students at inappropriate age levels” and asked the board to act on those titles.
Jarvis named several specific books she said are being made available in school libraries at younger ages than recommended by their publishers, citing Eleanor and Park, Shiver, Speak, Lexicon and Drama as examples. She said the district’s library catalog lists some titles for older readers while copies remain accessible in middle or elementary school media centers and asked the board to consider moving such titles to locations she deemed more age-appropriate or otherwise securing them.
Jarvis said the group supported “age appropriate content” rather than outright bans and referenced recent legislative work on HB 636 while urging the board to use its book-review processes. She also asked whether the listed books were on shelves and whether students could browse them in the library, suggesting titles be secured if that was the case.
Board procedure at the meeting limited public comments to three minutes; no formal action on library holdings was taken during the meeting. The board did not announce any immediate changes to the district’s book-challenge process; next steps were not scheduled on the public record.
