Board approves handbooks, agreements and routine action items; new high-school device procedures noted

The Brookings School District 05-1 board approved a bundle of routine and recurring items at its July meeting, including the consent agenda, personnel and finance motions, multiple handbooks and inter-district agreements.
The consent agenda — including the district calendar, open-enrollment designations, personnel report, vendor designations and meal-price updates — passed following a roll-call process. The board approved July donations supporting student travel to a national track meet and confirmed committee appointments for 2025–26.
Action items approved included recurring inter-district transportation agreements with Elkton and Oldham Ramona Rutland school districts; a facilities-use agreement with South Dakota State University for high-school football that includes a new $2,000-per-game rental fee; and a memorandum of understanding with SDSU for kindergarten services.
The board voted to hire ELO CPAs & Advisors to conduct the district’s 2024–25 audit and approved the custodians’ request to withdraw from AFSCME as their negotiating agent. Trustees also approved a 1% wage increase for facilities workers and custodians for 2025–26.
Administrators presented and the board adopted a slate of handbooks (classified, preschool family, elementary, intermediate, middle and high school). The high school handbook adds new procedures for electronic devices — students will use pouches to store phones during the school day — and administrators said they will hold parent forums in the fall to explain implementation.
Project SEARCH, a transition-year collaboration with SDSU, was approved to continue for another year though administrators noted cohort size may vary. The board adjourned after completing the agenda.
