Metuchen construction update targets Aug. 29 air-conditioning activation; PSE&G transformer delays could affect start-of-school timelines
Summary
Construction committee reported targets for air-conditioning and playground completion on Aug. 29 at several schools but said PSE&G transformer delays remain a risk for Campbell and the high school; field lights expected around September and new gym/board-of-ed space targeted for January 2026.

The Metuchen Board of Education’s construction committee provided a schedule update July 22 with multiple near-term targets and a caution about outstanding utility work.
Committee member Mister Glassberg briefed the board: several air-conditioning systems and additions at district schools — including full-day kindergarten and Edgar renovations — are targeted to be functioning by Aug. 29. Playground exterior work at Moss and cafeteria window replacements at Edgar were scheduled to be complete by Aug. 29 as well; interior courtyard playgrounds at Moss and Campbell were expected later in October. The committee reported the Campbell addition completion target as Aug. 22 but noted that PSE&G must install transformers for power to be available.
Why it matters: The committee said some projects are contingent on PSE&G’s scheduling. Glassberg said PSE&G had missed appointments for transformer installation, which raises concern about meeting the district’s goal of having air-conditioning functioning before school begins. Field lighting installation at the high school was estimated to be around September but would not be functional until the adjacent addition is completed; the new gym area and board-of-ed office space are targeted for January 2026.
The committee invited the public to two upcoming opportunities: an open public construction committee meeting on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Metuchen High School library/media center and an outreach presence at the Farmers Market on Aug. 16 where the committee will display updated photos and a video of construction progress.
Quote: "We are waiting on PSE and G to set some transformers that would allow the air conditioning to work," Mister Glassberg said, noting the appointment delays.
The report was informational; the board did not take further action at the July 22 meeting.
