The Atoka Board of Aldermen on May 13 approved first consideration of an FY25 budget amendment that reallocates funds across multiple town accounts and includes an appropriation for water-system work to address pressure problems in the Shepherd’s Ridge subdivision.
Staff summarized increases in the legislative budget to cover training and travel, overtime costs in the fire fund driven by vacancies, an increase to the solid-waste fund driven by added residential customers, and water-fund adjustments tied to an infrastructure-planning grant and a proposed $50,000 tank installation to improve pressure in Shepherd’s Ridge. Public-works staff described that hydrant testing revealed pressure drops when hydrants are activated and that a vault and new connection to a Poplar Grove 20-inch main will be part of a developer partnership to stabilize flow.
Board members discussed prior feasibility work on a town water plant and whether the $54,000 estimate for Shepherd’s Ridge payments jeopardizes the water fund’s net position. Staff said the proposed amendment accounts for the cost and that reimbursements and transfers were expected to keep the fund out of a negative net position and avoid state intervention. The ordinance was read by title and approved on first consideration; the roll-call vote passed 4 yes to 2 no.
