Student board interns showcase district outreach projects, forensics showcase draws 38 middle-school participants

High-school board interns presented May 19 to the Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education a yearlong slate of projects intended to connect younger students to district programs and highlight points of pride.
"For any of you who may not know, my name is Addie Sherman and I'm a junior at Bloomfield Hills High School," Addie told the board as she introduced the Youth Action Council’s work. Interns described projects across girls and boys athletics, theater, forensics and music, and said their work focused on building relationships between high school students and younger learners.
The forensics project included a middle-school showcase and a mock tournament. Ava Moyer, one of the forensics leads, reported: "We had 38 middle schoolers participate — 9 sixth graders, 17 seventh graders, and 12 eighth graders" and said follow-up feedback indicated participants enjoyed the experience and were more likely to pursue forensics at the high school level.
Other interns demonstrated a "day-in-my-life" video intended for orientations and information nights. Student presenters said the videos and slide decks are designed to help middle-school students visualize programs and increase participation in music, theater and athletics. "We hope this will increase excitement and awareness about what it's like to be a high school student," an intern said as the group showed the compiled video.
Superintendent West and board members praised the interns’ initiative and community impact. Board members emphasized the presentations as practical outreach tools that can feed into the district’s broader strategic-planning and recruitment goals.
Next steps: interns plan to provide materials (slides, videos) to school leaders for use at orientations and information nights, and the board thanked the students for their work this year.
