Atoka board adopts revised wall-sign rules after advertised public hearing

The Atoka Board of Aldermen adopted an amendment to the town zoning ordinance affecting wall sign regulations on second reading during its May 13 meeting.
The board held a public hearing at 6:15 p.m. on the proposed ordinance — which had its first consideration March 11 and was advertised April 14 — but no members of the public spoke during the hearing. Planning commission materials and a staff report were included in the board packet and the planning commission recommended the regulatory changes to the board.
Mayor Gary Aiken read the ordinance title as an amendment to Title 14, Chapter 2, Section 201 of the Atoka Municipal Code and the board moved to adopt by roll-call vote. The mayor announced the vote as unanimous; the ordinance passed on second reading and is adopted.
The town administrator and staff said the amendment implements the planning commission’s recommended changes to wall sign language; staff indicated the revision excludes political sign language at this time and that a separate review on that section remains pending.
The board moved on to other business after adoption. No immediate implementation date was announced during the meeting; staff told the board the ordinance would proceed according to the town’s normal code-adoption process.
