Board approves broad policy updates aligning district rules with new state laws

The Bentonville School District board voted Wednesday to approve a package of policy updates designed to align district rules with new state laws.

Miss Sharp reviewed scores of amendments touching entrance requirements, compulsory attendance, student transfers, school choice, absences (including excused absences tied to political speech), disciplinary procedures, harassment regulations, student medication protocols and emergency response drills. She tied changes to numerous Arkansas acts and noted the district is renumbering several policies to align with the Arkansas School Board Association's structure.

Highlights included updated language for transfer and homeschool eligibility, a provision to recognize GED test‑takers in attendance exceptions, expanded recognition of nasal spray epinephrine in addition to auto‑injectable epinephrine, updated emergency response drill requirements to include cardiac emergency plans, and a new policy addressing antisemitism to meet the requirements of act 7‑21. Miss Sharp told the board that some revised policies are presented as new documents because the changes were substantial.

A board member asked how participation would be credited for private‑school students who attend a single class in the district; Miss Sharp said the attendance funding is prorated for one class. Another question concerned whether weather or short‑notice early dismissals would qualify as an "emergency" under the cell‑phone policy; Miss Sharp said she would check procedural language and follow up.

The board moved and approved the policy package as presented.
