Bentonville School Board appoints Rachel Nutt (Zone 1) and Bill Akins (at-large)

The Bentonville School District Board of Education on June 26 appointed Rachel Nutt to the Zone 1 seat and Bill Akins to an at-large seat following public introductions and roll-call votes.
Nutt, a Bentonville native and 2003 Bentonville High School graduate, told the board she has a business degree from John Brown University and the University of Arkansas, works in her family business (Austin Companies) and has served as PTO treasurer at TJ. During a board exchange she said the Zone 1 seat will be up for election in March 2026 and that she would likely run at that time.
Bill Akins introduced himself as a University of Arkansas professor and local business and community leader with experience in business, academia and nonprofit mentoring programs. He described involvement with local entrepreneurship programs and said he might consider running for the board in the future.
The board took separate motions for each vacancy. For the Zone 1 appointment, a motion by Willie and a second by Jeremy carried on a roll-call vote in which present members voted yes and the motion was approved. For the at-large appointment, the board moved and seconded the nomination of Akins; the roll-call vote again recorded affirmative votes from the members present and the motion was approved. The board welcomed both appointees.
Each applicant had been invited to speak for up to 10 minutes and to describe their connections to the district, whether they have students enrolled, and how they would approach board service. The board’s packet stated the district collected online applications, shortlisted candidates and scheduled tonight’s interviews. Nutt emphasized prioritizing students and supporting teachers; Akins emphasized governance, community ties and placing governance above micromanagement of day-to-day operations.
The meeting record shows the board handled the appointments as formal motions with roll-call votes and then moved to executive session on personnel matters. The personnel recommendations discussed in executive session were later approved on a subsequent roll-call vote before the meeting adjourned.
