Cognia tells Spearfish School Board district rated above network average; recommends next steps

Shannon Vogler, associate evaluator for Cognia, presented the results of a recent accreditation review to the Spearfish School Board on May 12, describing the district’s systemwide accreditation process and performance against Cognia performance standards.
Vogler said Cognia interviewed 95 stakeholders during the on-site review and that district- or consultant-led classroom observations totaled approximately 325. She reported the district’s Index of Education Quality (IEQ) at 310 compared with a Cognia network average of 296 and noted that Spearfish exceeded the network average in every learning-environment rating except digital learning.
“We really see ourselves as a partner with Spearfish Public Schools in helping them continue to be quality as well as thrive and continue to improve,” Vogler said, calling shared leadership focused on learners’ well-being a ‘noteworthy practice’ identified during the review. She outlined areas for improvement and encouraged the board and staff to use the findings to guide professional development and continuous-improvement planning.
Board members thanked the Cognia team for the review. The presentation included background on Cognia’s standards and rubric and a reminder that accreditation emphasizes ongoing improvement rather than a one-time ranking.
