Benton County board adopts budget resolutions, moves to fund textbooks and security cameras

The Benton County Board of Education on March 5 approved multiple budget resolutions presented by staff, including allocations recommended for textbook adoption and school security upgrades.
Staff told trustees one proposal would use $500,000 from fund balance for a textbook adoption cycle and another item would allocate roughly $200,000 toward technology and security upgrades to ensure consistent camera coverage in all schools. The director said insurance recoveries related to a prior chiller claim and a federal COPS grant (cited in discussion at about $428,000) would help offset costs.
"That is to need our part in the security cameras to make sure every school has the same technology," a staff member said during the budget resolution discussion.
Budget committee chair summarized the committee's March 20 meeting and recommended approval of the committee report; the board then approved the budget committee report and the printed budget resolutions by voice votes (budget committee report approval and budget resolutions recorded as approved). Roll call for one of the budget items produced an 11-yes vote when noted.
Board members discussed timing for additional facility and capital planning, including a potential roofing project that staff estimated around $1.2 million if the board decides to proceed with a particular vendor option.
Board members and staff said they will continue discussion during upcoming budget meetings; no additional appropriations were finalized beyond the resolutions adopted at the meeting.
The board scheduled a buildings/property committee meeting for April 24 and a budget meeting the same evening at 6 p.m.
