Erie City SD introduces Student Leadership Program; superintendent highlights convocation and new Bravo Awards

The Erie City School District on Tuesday unveiled a new Student Leadership Program that will seat nine student leaders at the board dais and give them a year-long advisory role on district matters.
During the Committee of the Whole meeting, Dr. Brennaman said the SLP was developed with high school students from Erie High, Collegiate and Patrick J. (as named in the transcript) and in consultation with student governance groups. Three students from each school will serve as student leaders, rotating dais representation by month. "They will serve in this role for a whole year," Dr. Brennaman said as he named the September representative Carmen and other student leaders present.
Superintendent Dr. Gibbs used the same meeting to celebrate the start of the school year, praise new and returning staff for the energy they brought to convocation and announced the district's new "Bravo Award," intended to honor staff, volunteers and community partners who go "above and beyond the call of duty." She singled out operations staff and building engineers for their summer work and asked the board to congratulate those who received recognition.
"It takes a village," Dr. Gibbs said, thanking staff responsible for food services, transportation and building preparation. The superintendent also said the district remains committed to reviewing internal processes to support students' academic success while meeting external accountability standards.
Board members praised the convocation, describing it as a unifying event that energized staff after a long gap and reinforced district priorities. Ms. Erwin, who led the convocation recap, described the gathering as "an absolutely electric event" that brought new and veteran staff together under a common mission.
The district said it will continue working with student leaders and advisors to identify how students can contribute — by conducting surveys, proposing agenda items and acting as a communication bridge between the schools and the board. The committee adjourned the open session and moved to an executive session on personnel matters.
