Bleacher accident prompts Cromwell schools to close seating and request insurance inspection

The Cromwell Board of Education said it has closed all district bleachers after a "freak accident" that caused at least one injury during a recent game.
"We have closed off usage of all the bleachers throughout the district until we look into it more," a board presenter said, adding that the family of the injured person has been contacted and the district is working with town officials.
Board members said they will work with Town Manager Salvatore and the district's insurer (identified in the meeting as Kerma) to conduct an on-site walk-through and identify short-term mitigations such as adding stakes or installing fencing to protect spectators from foul balls. One board member noted the district has sought a $50,000 replacement for bleachers in the past and suggested that remain an option.
An unidentified board speaker urged the insurance inspection also to include advice on protective fencing after describing a venue with a large fence that blocked foul balls.
The board said it will coordinate next steps with town officials and facilities staff, and that further updates will be provided after the insurer completes its review. No policy vote was taken; the item was discussed as an operational and safety matter.
