Sweetwater staff reports revenue win, community center options and traffic-light control change

City staff told the Sweetwater board the city had a successful appeal with the Department of Revenue that will stop a portion of monthly sales tax from being diverted to the county, restoring $2,843 per month beginning with May collections; staff estimated that amount could total about $3,940,000 over a 15-year period.
Staff also said a 3-foot corner of the planned community center parcel sits in a floodway, which creates a conflict with the CDBG grant. Jessica presented four or five options for coping with the issue — including moving available CDBG funds to the pool project, rebuilding the community center five feet away (which would require demolition), or other alternatives — and scheduled a July 7 meeting at 5:00 p.m. to review the options.
Jessica announced a bridge dedication at Exit 62 honoring war veteran Charles Pruitt on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., and invited board members and the public to attend. She also said the city will assume control of traffic-light maintenance from the utility board starting July 1 to avoid an ongoing $60,000 annual maintenance charge; the city will train staff for basic resets and has contracted Stansell Electric for a two-hour response time when outside help is needed.
The board also discussed upcoming July appointments and vacancies on the building code board of review and the tree board, and scheduled a July 28 strategic planning session to bring incoming members up to speed.
