Sweetwater opens public hearing on proposed property tax rate; vote set for Sept. 16

The Sweetwater City Council opened a public hearing on its proposed maintenance-and-operations (M&O) and interest-and-sinking (I&S) tax rate. The presiding officer read the proposed rates: M&O 0.448972 and I&S 0.064641 for a total rate of 0.516313 per $100 of valuation. The mayor said the tax rate "will effectively be raised by 5.36%" and that the change would raise taxes on a $100,000 home by approximately $26.85.
No members of the public addressed the hearing during the meeting. The council closed the hearing and scheduled a formal vote on the proposed tax rate for the council meeting on Sept. 16.
