Friends group seeks community support for Detroit River Refuge benefit dinner

Gary Kirsch, chair of the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance (the refuge’s friends group), briefed the council on the refuge units in Monroe and solicited community support for the Alliance’s 19th annual benefit dinner on Sept. 25 at Silver Shores Waterfront.
Kirsch said the Alliance is a volunteer nonprofit that raises funds to support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local refuge operations, including environmental education, hawk watches and equipment purchases such as a Marshmaster used to manage wetlands and invasive species. He told council the Alliance’s goal for this year is to raise $75,000 and to return attendance to pre‑pandemic levels (about 400 seats). Tickets and sponsorships are available, and the Alliance plans to recognize participating communities after the event.
Council thanked Kirsch and noted the refuge units within Monroe’s borders and the refuge’s cooperative role with the national park and county organizations. Kirsch left brochures and offered to answer follow‑up questions by email.
