Resident asks Greer council to consider naming park for longtime coach Butch Miller

Greer — During public comment on Sept. 23, resident Rodney Hinton asked the Greer City Council to consider naming a park or facility in honor of the late Butch Miller, a local coach and volunteer.
Hinton, who identified himself as living in Greenville and raised in the Victor Mill community, described Miller's community contributions — coaching youth sports, helping children afford participation and serving as an athletic director — and said Miller's family suggested memorial contributions could be made to the Greer Parks, Recreation and Tourism Scholarship Fund. "I would love to be able to give some money and and put his name on a park if y'all would so consider it," Hinton said.
Council members responded that the city is reviewing and updating its naming rights policy and guardrails as it moves forward with planned sports and events facilities. The mayor and staff said there will be opportunities to bring the matter back before council for discussion and that staff is looking at policy language to guide naming decisions.
Hinton noted Butch Miller's son, Chris Miller, was in the audience; the council thanked Hinton for his suggestion and said staff will consider the request as naming opportunities arise.
Next step: Council indicated a member may bring the item forward in the future and staff will incorporate appropriate policy guardrails into the city's naming process.
