Florence council unanimously approves agreement with Kenton County to support senior services

The Florence City Council voted unanimously to approve Resolution R 5 20 25, authorizing an agreement between the Kent County Fiscal Court and the City of Florence to provide senior services at the Florence senior center.

City staff explained that construction of the senior center was funded in part with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which requires the facility be open to all residents regardless of county. The city contracts with the YMCA to manage day-to-day operations of the senior center and contributes toward that management contract; the North Kentucky Area Development District provides about $40,000 annually to the program, staff said.

Staff said this is the first time Kenton County has contributed funds to the center, after records showed about 135 unique Kenton County visitors used the center’s services in the prior year. "Part of the caveat of receiving that money to build that [senior center] ... requires that the senior center is basically open to all individuals," Mister Hunt said. Another council member noted that Florence’s senior center draws seniors from neighboring areas because of strong programming.

A motion to approve the resolution was made by Miss Wingo and seconded by Miss Chambers. The council took a roll-call vote with recorded affirmative votes from Miss Wingo, Miss Chambers, Miss Whelan, Mister Schneider and Miss Cable; the mayor announced the motion passed 5-0.

No closed session was requested; the council adjourned after the vote.
