City staff presented a proposed FY2025 budget calendar to Bristol City Council on Jan. 28 that establishes deadlines and public opportunities ahead of adoption. Department budget work papers began last November, outside agency applications are due Jan. 31, internal department management meetings will occur in February and the Bristol Virginia Public Schools budget presentation and an initial budget workshop are scheduled for March 11.
The city manager will present the budget on April 8; the city plans to advertise the budget on April 12 and hold a public hearing for the appropriation ordinance on April 22. The first reading of the budget ordinance is scheduled for May 13 and the second reading for May 27. The timeline aims to meet the legal requirement to enact the ordinance by July 1. Staff said additional workshops can be added if necessary and encouraged early public engagement so council can adapt budget proposals before formal hearings.
Council members welcomed the schedule, noting it should reduce the need for long Saturday workshops and increase opportunities for public comment at regular meetings. Council encouraged residents to participate early in the process.
