Council authorizes $64,000 vehicle purchase for fire operations

The Brookings City Council authorized the fire department on June 23 to purchase a Dodge pickup from Roberson Motors for $43,126.50 and to have it outfitted by Cascade Fire and Equipment for $20,803.54.
Chief McCray and Captain Watson said the vehicle will replace an aging Durango command vehicle that has high mileage and limited capacity to carry equipment and personnel. Captain Watson said the new pickup’s slide-in module would allow the department to carry rescue and medical gear and to transport more personnel — expanding capacity from two people to four or five — and that the higher clearance would improve access to remote locations. “Right now, we’re really only able to carry 2 people in there. We’d be up to 4 or 5 at that point,” Watson said.
Staff said they solicited comparable quotes from dealers holding state bid contracts and that the Dodge from Roberson Motors was several thousand dollars below competing Ford and Chevrolet options. The procurement policy permits use of state pricing agreements. Council asked about delivery timelines; staff estimated about 90–120 days for the vehicle plus upfitting lead time, projecting roughly five months before the vehicle would be fully ready.
A motion to authorize purchase and to allow the finance director to enter a financing agreement passed unanimously in the recorded voice vote.
