Superintendent: federal ESEA grant delay will pause one new hire; district to use carryover funds

Superintendent Sue Doris briefed the Auburn School Committee on July 16 on a pause in federal ESEA grant allocations for fiscal year 2026 and the district's immediate response.
"The US Department of Education did not release the full FY26 grant funding on July 1 as we would expect," Doris said, adding that allocations for states are under review by the Federal Office of Management and Budget. She provided typical allocation amounts for planning purposes: Title II approximately $250,000 (professional development, literacy and math instructional support, class-size reduction positions and the Auburn Induction Academy), Title III about $30,000 (multilingual learners supports) and Title IV about $100,000 (AP exams and transfers into Title I).
Doris said carryover funds will allow the district to begin the school year and fund existing positions: "We'll use the existing carryover funds to begin the school year," she said. She also said a planned math instructional coach position tied to Title II will be put on hold "until we know what we're going to be receiving and when." When asked about timing, she told the committee the district expected an update in late September or early October.
Doris said Title 3 programming is not impacted because carryover funds are adequate this year and that Title I and special education funding are not affected by the federal delay. She pledged to keep the committee updated as more information becomes available.
