Auburn School Committee hears facilities update; state list ranks East Auburn highest among district schools

Assistant Superintendent Scott Anier told the Auburn School Committee on July 16 that summer maintenance is underway across the district and that new priorities will follow from a recently released state construction-priority list.
"Last Wednesday, the ninth, the state priority construction list was released," Anier said, then read district placements: East Auburn at 21, Walton 31, Washburn 57, Fairview 74, Sherwood 77, AMS 79 and Park Ave 94 out of 96 schools. He said schools ranked higher on the list will work with the Department of Education and the district's design team on next steps. "Those schools that are closer up the list, will start working with the DOE in terms of their plans," he said.
Anier outlined an AMS advisory committee process with initial meetings facilitated by Harriman and a schedule that includes an advisory meeting July 23 and community meetings planned for September and October. He said Harriman will coordinate with Ben Wilson at AMS and that the facilities subcommittee, the full school committee and city council are factored into the review timeline.
The presentation also covered safety and maintenance work. Anier described a recent bus-tour review of railroad crossings and sight lines prompted by new railroad speed regulations and said district and public works staff are coordinating on visibility and timing at crossings. He added that playground work at Walton and Sherwood is scheduled for the week and that the city has prioritized crosswalk striping near schools to be completed ahead of the school year.
Committee members questioned the frequency of crosswalk striping and offered volunteer support for proposed projects—Pat Cottier, who said he used to run a nursery, offered assistance for a planned greenhouse at Edward Little. Anier described the greenhouse as a collaborative project involving the district's food service department and high-school curriculum staff.
The committee was given a schedule of advisory and review dates and told updates will be posted on the district website. No formal vote or action on construction funding occurred at the meeting; Anier said state funding availability will determine how far down the list the DOE advances projects.
