Chippewa County board approves county bills, grants, contracts and several resolutions; Amtrak resolution tabled

Other approvals included forwarding liquor-tax fund requests from Northcare Network, endorsing a 50th Circuit Court drug program request (around $85,000 expected from the state), and authorizing a $12,000 reallocation from MVAA grant wages to outreach for veterans.
The board accepted a $5,840 award from TC Energy's social impact team to the Sheriff's Office for boat lifesaving equipment, and authorized a request-for-proposal for veterinary services covering shelter visits and sterilization. It approved a central server purchase recommendation: a quote from Avalon Technologies for $15,138.98 plus a $1,000 software-transfer (noted as $1,000 over budget) and authorized follow-up procurement steps.
The board approved a quote from Wolverine Power Systems to replace the county building generator's radiator at $15,425.04 and authorized an agreement with Dr. Kyle Raycraft to provide backup medical examiner services at $125 per decedent plus travel/mileage at the IRS rate. Finance committee recommended approval of April county bills and payroll: general claims $441,240.10; other fund claims $4,922,321.95; payroll $605,720.45; health department claims $291,512.87 and payroll $132,274.69 — total claims $6,393,180.06 — and the board carried the recommendation.
Separately, the board unanimously approved Resolution 2025-06 recognizing Correctional Officers Week and approved Resolution 2025-07 to authorize central dispatch (MPSCS) integration agreements and signatures by central dispatch staff. A citizen-drafted Resolution 2025-08 urging Amtrak service to the Upper Peninsula was debated and then tabled for language cleanup and return next month.
The minutes record additional committee comments about a cluster of foreclosures affecting motels and apartments that temporarily displaced renters; administrators said electricity at affected properties had been restored following legal counsel advice and that county staff and community organizations were assisting tenants while longer-term solutions are explored.
All finance and contract approvals recorded in the meeting minutes were passed as motions or voice votes by the board.
