San Bernardino County Transportation Authority told the council Measure I, a county half-cent sales tax, has raised more than $2.5 billion since 2010 and helps fund local pavement, signals and regional projects; staff invited public feedback on priorities.
Twentynine Palms — A representative from the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) briefed the city council on Measure I, the countywide half-cent sales tax that funds local and regional transportation projects.
Luis Vidarian of SBCTA told the council Measure I has raised more than $2,500,000,000 since 2010 and contributed more than $700,000,000 for local streets, sidewalks and traffic signals. He said combined with state and federal funds Measure I has helped deliver approximately $2,900,000,000 in regional projects and supported job creation tied to transportation investments.
Vidarian listed examples of Measure I-funded efforts that benefit Twentynine Palms, including pavement maintenance, intersection safety improvements, the Split Rock Road bridge project and improvements on State Route 62. He stressed taxpayer protections within Measure I, including an independent oversight committee and a 1% administrative-cap limit.
Councilmembers asked how vehicle electrification and declines in gas-tax revenue would affect funding. Vidarian explained that Measure I is a sales tax and is less exposed to declines in gasoline excise taxes than state gas-tax programs; he said the county is studying alternate routes and options such as bus-rapid-transit where appropriate.
SBCTA asked local leaders and residents to provide input through a Measure I survey to help shape future priorities and projects.
