Board approves negotiations with Corley Redfoot for three gym designs and greenlights HVAC contracts for six gyms

The Chatham County Board of Education on Aug. 11 approved two facilities actions: staff will pursue contract negotiations with Corley Redfoot Architects to design three new gymnasiums, and the board authorized beginning contract negotiations with awardees for HVAC installation in six existing gymnasiums.
Chris Blice, assistant superintendent for operations, described the capital-improvement plan project to build new gymnasiums at Bennett, Bonley and Silk Cove Schools and said the district received five RFQ responses before narrowing finalists to Corley Redfoot and ADW Hobbs. A six-person panel, including county manager Brian Thompson, unanimously recommended Corley Redfoot; the board approved negotiating a design contract.
Blice also presented a two‑package HVAC procurement to add cooling to six gymnasiums that currently lack air conditioning. Package 1 (George Moses Horton, Moncure and J.S. Waters) will proceed with Herrod & Associates; package 2 (Chatham Middle, North Chatham and Perry Harrison) will proceed with Matthews Mechanical pending contract negotiations. Board members discussed aesthetics, timelines and funding sources (projects are CIP-funded through the county) before approving the motions by voice vote.
District staff said gym construction and major HVAC work are multi‑year projects and that details on design, cost and schedules will follow contract negotiations and design phases.
