Charlottesville Middle School readies for fall as board hears detailed construction and safety plan

Mister Jordan, Charlottesville Middle School lead, told the school board on June 5 that the rebuilt middle school is on track for students to return in August and described operational changes to keep students safe while construction continues. He said students will be served at temporary locations this summer (Johnson/Tall Oaks) while key renovation work — including concrete pours and a construction fence around the main and Fine Arts buildings — continues at the site.

The presentation focused on logistics staff have planned for arrival, dismissal, lunches and transitions. "We will have a coverage plan for arrival, dismissal, and lunches," Jordan said, describing administrators and CSAs placed throughout the building to monitor movement and ensure safety. He said staff are moving toward a fob-based access system that will limit key distribution and tighten door access compared with the existing building layout.

Why it matters: the changes affect routes families have used for years. Jordan described a new bus loop that will wrap around the property, buses arriving from Ninth Street and parents using Cherry Avenue for drop-off, and temporary parking created on an outdoor basketball court to expand staff parking in the coming year. He warned that parking will be more constrained than in previous years and asked for patience while staff and families adapt.

Jordan walked the board through temporary classroom and food-service arrangements. With no cafeteria available during renovation, D Building will be reconfigured into lunch serving areas and temporary classrooms; Jordan said the plan assumes roughly 24 students per temporary classroom for lunch and that custodial and facilities crews will ready spaces before the August opening. He acknowledged an accessibility concern for one proposed entrance and asked the division to revisit ADA access details before the school year begins.

On schedules and programs, Jordan said the school will keep two teams per grade, maintain 79-minute core class blocks and 45-minute electives, and provide teachers 45 minutes of unencumbered planning time daily. Furniture delivery is scheduled the week of July 7, and the school plans a student orientation on Monday, Aug. 11, followed by phased family back-to-school nights with a targeted goal of allowing families into the building around Aug. 20.

Board members asked several operational questions about traffic flow, ADA access and how fine-arts ensembles and athletics will be accommodated. Jordan said band and orchestra rehearsals will take place at Charlottesville High School with transportation provided and that the Performing Arts Center will be used for concerts. He also said swim practices will continue at the aquatic center and that some sports will be held offsite at district fields.

Looking ahead, Jordan asked the board to expect ongoing updates over the summer as inspections, furniture delivery and final accessibility checks are completed. The board did not take separate action on this presentation; it will be implemented as staff finalizes construction timelines and operational details.
