Neighbors say they were not notified before industrial approach approved on Harmon Street

Several residents at the Oct. 20 meeting told council they were surprised and upset that plans for an industrial driveway on Harmon Street were approved without direct notice to affected neighbors.
Rosemarie Ashley, a longtime St. Clair Shores resident, said neighbors believed a rezoning decision years earlier carried a condition that would prevent an approach from being constructed on Harmon. "They were told there would be no approach to Harmon," Ashley said, describing the neighborhood's expectation that they would be notified of changes. She said construction began two days after the council allegedly resolved the issue at a prior meeting and that the affected homeowner had not been contacted as of the meeting date.
Mayor Walbee said he had intervened to negotiate a less-intrusive plan, but Ashley and other residents said they consider the matter unresolved and urged council to require mandatory notice to residents in similar situations. Council and staff said the city is not always required to provide voluntary notice before approving certain site plans, but promised to review approaches to improve community communication.
