St. Clair Shores approves $370,002.52 ambulance purchase to preserve build-queue slot

The St. Clair Shores City Council on Oct. 20 voted to purchase a new ambulance by approving staff’s recommendation to accept a 2023 bid price honored by the vendor. The purchase order awarded the vehicle to McQueen at a price of $370,002.52, with cot and loader equipment to be budgeted separately.
Fire Department presenter Michael Hadad explained modern ambulance build times have stretched to about three years. He said the city had previously solicited prices in December 2023 and that the dealer (originally Kodiak) and the factory (Braun, Van Wert, Ohio) agreed to honor the earlier price. "Braun is built in Van Wert, Ohio, and that's who would honor all the warranties," Hadad told council.
Council members asked whether dealer changes would affect warranties; Hadad said factory warranties remain intact and local service arrangements will continue. The council also discussed budget timing: carrying the expense into the fiscal 2027 motor pool budget and budgeting separately for the cot/loader system (about $60,000 in 2023 pricing).
Miss Rusey moved and Mister Rebello seconded awarding the purchase; the motion carried by voice vote.
